A Day with Wayne Johnston

A few years back my niece Emma, who shares the same love of Miane that I do, and I headed up to my 1st cousin Angela Johnston Thibeau and her daughter Heathers home in NH for a week long trip to "The County". Angela is my first cousin on our mothers side so we spent most of our trip with my Aunt Jean. We did plan one day with Angela's father, who I still think of as Uncle Wayne. Angela, Heather, Emma and myself hop in the car and head over to the Northern Maine Fairgrounds to hook up with Wayne and his son Chris at the stables and racetrack. Wayne and Chris get a horse harnessed up for Emma to go for a ride, Wayne chooses a horse that he doesn't believe performs well and will go slowly around the track. So off go Wayne and Emma at a nice slow pace until the horse rounds the corner and takes off like a bullet I am on the sidelines freaking out a bit as this horse goes around again and finally they come to a stop. This is when Waynes colorful caharacter comes out, let's say he has a way with words and not much of a filter, all three of his kids inherited his wit. From this moment forward we tell Emma that most of the jokes and words she hears today will need to be kept top secret. Wayne took us through Amish country and we got to go through the potato fields that day, not just around them, but through the tracks that I was never able to go through as a kid that was a wish of mine that came true that day. Emma was on the lookout for Moose but they were elusive that day. NEXT STOP..... a dirty smelly pig farm on a 95 degree day. We open the doors and the stench slaps us across the face immediately. Wayne, Angela and Emma hop on out of the car while Heather and I are left gagging wondering if we can do this.....as the stench of steaming hot pig sh*t settles in our noses, we head in. We were happy we did as some piglets had been born days before and they were the cutest little things. Our tour of the pig farm barn continued and let's just say we saw some very large male pigs and all their pig hood . Wayne got a kick out of this( insert colorful language here) we look at Emma and she proclaims Top Secret...got it! We finally head over to Wayne and Penny's place, what a warm a welcoming home.Penny kicks off her shoes off and sits on the floor to chat with us as Emma plays with Pete the dog. We make plans to head over to Chris and Kelleys house ,which is just as welcoming. Wayne and Penny meet us at the Northeastland Hotel in Presque Isle for dinner. Chris takes some video for his new blog, which I never did see....lots more colorful language from Wayne and Chris...Emma pretending not to hear then it's time for goodbyes. I hug them all tight especially Wayne as he is my cousins father and without him they wouldn't be here. I am grateful to have spent that day with Wayne Johnston getting to know him again and peeking into his life....Thank you for the memories that my neice Emma and I will treasure forever ...goodby Uncle Wayne...
