Obituary for Nancy L. McLaughlin (Finnemore)

Nancy L. McLaughlin (Finnemore)
NANCY L. MCLAUGHLIN
CASWELL & FORT FAIRFIELD

Caswell & Fort Fairfield - Nancy Lorraine (Finnemore) McLaughlin was born to Floyd and Mattie (Gould) Finnemore on December 31, 1935 in Caswell Plantation, Maine. Throughout her life, she resided in The County and died at her home in Fort Fairfield surrounded by loved ones on November 27, 2023 (Age 87).

She graduated from Limestone High School in 1953 and the University of Maine at Orono in 1957 with a BS in Home Economics Education. During her time in college, she served as the kitchen manager at ‘The Elms’ cooperative home and was selected to attend The Merrill Palmer Institute for Child & Family Development for a semester.

She married Lloyd George McLaughlin on April 26, 1957. Together they danced, sang, built a camp, studied scripture, traveled, loved God, watched Tigers’ basketball, raised six children and 80 acres of potatoes. Through the years, they enjoyed an expanding family and close-knit community.

In addition to book-keeping for the farming business, Nancy worked for 16+ years as an educator, teaching elementary music education in Caswell, and Home Economics in Fort Fairfield until her retirement in 1996. Along the way she served in an advisory role for yearbook, junior exhibition, senior class, and the Latch-Key Program.

As a youth, Nancy was a member of the Pine Needle 4-H Club where she learned to cook, sew, and raise baby beef. Years later, she continued to sew clothing for her own family as well as others in the community. She led the Maine Chickadees 4-H Club for years, passing along her love of cooking, sewing, and other handcrafts to others. Many a gown was made or altered by Nancy, and many a biscuit consumed (with either strawberry jam or ‘stinky-foot’ jelly).

She was a long-time member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority where she made life-long friendships while serving her community through acts of citizenship, fellowship, and charity. A member of the Caswell/Limestone United Methodist Church, the Fort Fairfield United Parish Church, and the United Parish Women, Nancy served as organist, Sunday School Teacher, President of UPW, and many other roles within her church family. She will be long remembered for her Fish Chowder Luncheon at the Christmas Bazaar.

Anyone who met Nancy, knew the strength of her faith, her passion for teaching, and her love of children. She was generous, kind, and driven to make a meaningful difference. To that end, a significant amount of Red Rose tea and molasses cookies were consumed while caring for others.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Lloyd G. McLaughlin; and five brothers (Robert, Heben, Frederick, James, and Timothy Finnemore); a daughter-in-law, Patricia Smith McLaughlin; a brother and sister-in-law, Nelson and Camila Lee Roix; and sister-in-law, Lorraine McLaughlin.

She is survived by her sister Priscilla (Paul) Nichols, sisters-in-law, Brenda, Roberta, Nancy, Robertine, and Kathy Finnemore; brother-in-law, Louis R.H. McLaughlin; brother and sister-in-law; Bill and Christina Latham; her children and their spouses, Vaughn McLaughlin and Vicki King, George and Tammie McLaughlin, Martha and Drew Hadley, Jason McLaughlin and Robin Grant, Kent McLaughlin and Lisa Simko, and Meg and Brad Hegemann; many nieces and nephews and other extended family.

Beloved grandchildren include James (Amanda) McLaughlin, Brittany (Brian) Cusick, Brendan (Amanda) McLaughlin, Kaitlyn McLaughlin; Christie King Rosado, Randy King; Mitchell McLaughlin, Nathan McLaughlin; Sean Hadley, Megan Hadley, and Jennifer (Chris) Hund; Tyler McLaughlin, Jonathan McLaughlin; Michael McLaughlin, Shane McLaughlin, and Rose McLaughlin; Aaron (Krystal) Gagne; Emma Hegemann, Zachary Hegemann, and Elise Hegemann.

Seventeen children were blessed to have her as their great grandmother, Cammi King, Graedon and Jameson Rosado, Sarah, Aubrey, and Mattie McLaughlin, Meredith, Lenora and Oakley Cusick, Bailey and Mason McLaughlin, Jaxyn McLaughlin, Mason, Brian and Deacon King, Dominic and Nova Gagne.

In honor of Mom, bake your favorite recipe, dance with your spouse, plant a flower at the cemetery, invite your neighbor for tea, and take a child to church. She requested memorial donations to the United Parish Church, P.O. Box 407, Fort Fairfield, Maine 04742.

A service to celebrate Nancy’s life will be conducted Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 12:00 noon at the United Parish Church 4 Church Street, Fort Fairfield with the Rev. Dr. Diane Langworthy and the Rev. Mary Miller co-officiating. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will take place immediately following the service in the church reception area. Interment will take place at a later date at the Advent Cemetery, Limestone. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. Online condolences may be expressed at www.gibersondorseyfuneralhome.com .
