Fort Fairfield & Presque Isle – Mavis Ladner Towle, 100, wife of the late Everett L. Towle Sr., passed on to her heavenly home on Sunday, November 12, 2023 in Mars Hill. She was born in Easton on October 23, 1923, the daughter of Banford and Jennie (Flewelling) Ladner. In honor of her 100th birthday, Mavis was recognized by the Fort Fairfield Town Council, which proclaimed October 23, 2023 as Mavis Ladner Towle Centennial Day in Fort Fairfield.

Mavis was a graduate of Easton High School and Becker College, Worchester, MA. The Modern Shoppe, which Mavis owned from 1948 to 1963 in Fort Fairfield, provided many young ladies with the latest fashions. She later became the office manager at the Fort Fairfield Utilities District until she retired in 1991. She was a charter member of 55 years of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Mavis married Everett L. Towle Sr. on October 28, 1961. Mavis became the stepmother of six girls and along with her daughter Susan, they instantly became a family of 9. The family was complete with the births of Kathryn and Everett Jr.. A new chapter for Mavis began when her daughter Kathryn was born with Down Syndrome. She served on the Board of Directors with the Central Aroostook Association over 50 years. In 2018 she was named Board Emeritus. She was a founding member of the Mother’s Club, a support group for families whose children have disabilities. She served on the Board of Directors with the Aroostook Regional Transportation for over 30 years. Her dedication to Opportunity Training Center changed the lives of hundreds of children throughout Aroostook County.

Mavis is survived by her son, Everett Towle Jr. of Warden, WA; step-daughters, Jacqueline Anderson (Robert) of Webster, NY, Mary Levasseur (Michael Weiss) of Vancouver, WA; and her son-in-law, Tim Olderburg of Dexter; special sister-in-law, Arlene Ladner of Easton; her grandchildren, Delaney Tucker, Ethan Towle, Josh Oldenburg, Lindsey Oldenburg, Cynthia Lebel, Terry Coffin, Liz Coffin, Charlie Anderson, Christina Sorrentino, Molly Martin, Elaine Haines, Michelle Tschudy, Tracy Choudbury, Tiffany Mullen, Serena Murray, Doug Dow, Jay Levasseur, Andre Levasseur, Stuart Fuller, Elliott Fuller; 29 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren. Mavis, also known as Aunt Mamie, had numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. One special niece, Ruth Ladner, has been her helper throughout the past few years. Mavis was predeceased by her husband, Everett Sr.; her daughters, Susan Oldenburg and Kathryn Towle; her step daughters, Nancy Haines, Carleen Coffin, Patricia McCue, and Christina Fuller; and grandchildren, Nate Coffin and Danny Haines; her brothers, Montford Ladner, Merlin Ladner; and sisters, Fern Morgan and Louise Libby. The many family gatherings, especially during the Potato Blossom Festival, will always be cherished memories.

Family meant everything to Mavis and her home, whether the farm or later in her apartment, was a gathering place of those from near and far. Her positive attitude, warm smile, and Lady Ashburnham pickles will never be forgotten.

Friends may call Saturday, November 18, 2023 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield, where the funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Kenneth Phelps officiating. Interment will follow at the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held after the interment at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield.
