Caribou – Nina J. Smith, 70, wife of Norman S. Smith, passed away Monday evening, August 7, 2023 at a Presque Isle hospice facility, following an extended illness. She was born October 17, 1952 in St. Francis, the daughter of Emile and Mary Jane (Harvey) Michaud.

Nina was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1971 and was married to Norman S. Smith on July 4, 2000. She was employed as a C.N.A. at the Calais Nursing Home for several years and was a talented quilter, who’s beautiful creations could been seen at various area craft fairs. She was also a wonderful cook, and her grandchildren where her world.

In addition to her parents, Nina was predeceased by one son, Roderick T. Plourde on July 4, 2018; three brothers, Hubert, Vinal and Doug Michaud; three sisters, Mary Albert, Beatrice Michaud and Beverly Michaud. She is survived by her husband of twenty-three years, Norman S. Smith of Caribou; one son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Heidi Plourde of Perham; one daughter, Tara Peterson of Presque Isle; two stepdaughters, Deborah K, Smith and Dianne R. Smith, both of New Jersey; two brothers, and sisters-in-law, Paul and Nancy Michaud, James and Rena Michaud, all of Caribou; four sisters, Emily Johnston and her husband David, Jean Downend and her husband Michael, Christine Pelkey, all of Caribou, Earleen York of Marion, VA; seven grandchildren, Raven Plourde of Calais, Clay Plourde, Garrett Plourde and Wyatt Plourde, all of Perham, Kaili Condon and Kaitlyn Condon, both of Portage Lake, Tracy Plourde of Bailyville; one great grandchild, Ryker Plourde of Calais; numerous nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Nina’s wishes, there will be no services. Interment will take place at the Green Ridge Cemetery, Caribou. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mrs. Smith the American Cancer Society, New England Division, One Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 300, Topsham, Maine 04086. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield.
