Obituary for Peter H. Gillespie

PETER H. GILLESPIE
LIMESTONE

Limestone – Peter H. Gillespie, 87, husband of the late Margaret (Wylie) Gillespie, passed away Monday afternoon, March 18, 2024 at the Aroostook House of Comfort, Presque Isle, following an extended illness. He was born November 27, 1936 in Fort Fairfield, the son of Herbert and Theresa (Dionne) Gillespie.

He was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School, class of 1954 and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Maine, Orono. Peter worked as a teacher in Woodstock, New Brunswick four years prior to moving to Limestone, where he served as a Junior and Senior High School Physical Education and Health Teacher for twenty-eight years. Peter was a member of the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Louis Catholic Church, Limestone, a member of the Phi Eta Cappa Fraternity, Orono, the Limestone and Fort Fairfield Knights of Columbus, the Limestone Lions Club, and a past Basketball and Soccer official serving all over the State of Maine. Peter also served eight years in the Maine Army National Guard.

In addition to his parents, Peter was predeceased by his wife Margaret on July 11, 2023; two brothers, Wilfred and Ralph Gillespie; five sisters, Martina Gillespie, Catherine Gillespie, Sister Mary Adeline Gillespie, Germaine Staples and Helen Bubar. He is survived by one daughter, Krista Newsome and her husband Robert of Norwich, CT; two sons, John H. Gillespie of Limestone, Peter A. Gillespie and his wife Sokie West Gillespie of Raleigh, NC; three sisters, Jeane Byrne of Florida, Marjorie Murray of Cape Elizabeth, and Ann Santinelli of Milford, NH; a brother-in-law, Roger Bubar of Fort Fairfield; grandchildren, Shane and Meagan Gillespie of Raleigh, NC, Austin Newsome of Norwich, CT, Alexandra DiPietro of Colchester, CT, Abigail Feder-Craney of Lebanon, CT; step-grandson, Jona West of Raleigh, NC; great grandchildren, Josephine and Lorelei Showalter of Raleigh, NC; numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place later in the spring at the Parish of the Precious Blood, St, Louis Catholic Church, Limestone. Interment will follow at the St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. The service date and time will be announced by the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield.
