Fort Fairfield – Donald M. “Don” Libby Sr., 91, husband of the late Bernadette (Deschaine) Libby, passed away Saturday morning, October 21, 2023 at the Aroostook House of Comfort, Presque Isle, following an extended illness. He was born March 21, 1932 in Fort Fairfield, the son of Eldon and Vera (Merrithew) Libby.

Don was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1951 and served with the Maine Army National Guard from 1949 to 1951. Don worked with the Canadian-Pacific Railroad as a Steam Locomotive Firemen in 1955 and 1956 then became employed with Bangor and Aroostook Railroad for fifteen years as a Locomotive Firemen. Don later became employed by the A & P Processing Plant in Fort Fairfield, later Interstate Foods, as a Boiler and Refrigeration Operator for 28 ½ years, and also worked at the North Maine Woods as an Attendant at Telos Gate for several years. Additionally, Don and his family worked on the farm for Ralph and Dorcas Everett for many years, which gave them a lifetime of wonderful memories. He was married to Bernadette Deschaine on August 21, 1952, and was a member of the former Fort Fairfield Eastern Frontier Masonic Lodge No. 112, AF & AM, most recently affiliated with the Presque Isle Trinity Masonic Lodge No. 130, AF & AM and was a member of the Anah Temple Shrine, Bangor. Don was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, fiddlehead picking and rides throughout the North Maine Woods. He also enjoyed garage sales and flea markets and was always up for any adventure.

In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his wife, Bernadette on October 24, 1976; one daughter, Jo-Ann McCrum; two brothers, Phillip and Wendell Libby; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Cyr Libby. He is survived by two sons, Donald M. Libby Jr. of Cowarts, AL, John A. Libby Sr. and his wife Neneth of Crestview, FL; two daughters, Marilyn Gardner and her husband Larry of Fort Fairfield, Tammy Nordstrum of Cowarts, AL; two brothers, Linwood Libby of Lyman, Beverly Libby and his wife Bertha of Caribou; a son-in-law, Graydon McCrum of Fort Fairfield; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Libby of Fort Fairfield. He was “Grampy Don” to fifteen grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. Don’s family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Emergency and Med-Surg departments at Northern Light A. R. Gould Hospital, Presque Isle, Gardiner Heath Center, Houlton and the Aroostook House of Comfort, Presque Isle for the wonderful and compassionate care given to Don during his illness.

In keeping with Don’s wishes, a private Masonic graveside service will be conducted at a later date at the St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Don to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114.
