New Sweden – E. Marie “Peggy” Bengtson, 97, wife of the late Erwin A. Bengtson, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 20, 2022 at a Caribou healthcare facility. She was born February 13, 1925 in Norway, Maine, the daughter of John H. and Effie A. (O’Neal) Peers.

She attended Caswell and Limestone schools, was a graduate of the Limestone High School, Class of 1942, and was married to Erwin A. Bengtson on November 10, 1943. In addition to being a dedicated farm wife and homemaker, Peggy had been employed by Chain Apparel and Miller’s in Caribou. She was a member of the Gustaf-Adolph Lutheran Church, New Sweden, where she was a member of the Lutheran Church Women. She was also a member of the New Sweden Health Council and the 4H Club. Peggy and Erwin were avid square dancers and belonged to both the Caribou Hoofers and the Presque Isle Spud Shufflers. Peggy received the Boston Post Cane on May 15, 2021 as the oldest resident in New Sweden. Peggy’s family was always the most important aspect of her life and she will be remembered as a wonderful and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and sister.

In addition to her parents, Peggy was predeceased by her husband of seventy-six years, Erwin on August 8, 2020; one son, Robert Bengtson; five brothers, Charles, Abel, Calvin, John and Louis Peers; two sisters, Amelita “Sis” Kennedy and Faye Michaud. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Linda Bengtson of China, Maine, Rodney and Michelle Bengtson of Berlin, NH; one daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Howard Higgins of New Sweden; one sister-in-law, June Peers of Limestone; eighteen grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, August 6, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the New Sweden Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Robert Smith officiating. A time of continued fellowship will take place after the service at the Bengtson family farm, New Sweden. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Peggy to the Gustaf-Adolph Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 54, New Sweden, Maine 04762. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield.
