Fort Fairfield – Sylvia G. Pelkey, 93, wife of the late John R. Pelkey Sr., passed away Thursday morning, May 11, 2023 at a Presque Isle nursing facility, following a period of declining health. She was born October 6, 1929 in Upper Frenchville, the daughter of Alfred and Cecile (Deschaine) Gorneault.

Sylvia attended school in Upper Frenchville and was married to John R. Pelkey Sr. on November 25, 1946. She was a communicant of the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, Fort Fairfield and had been a member of the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187 Ladies Auxiliary since 1976. In addition to being a dedicated homemaker, Sylvia also worked seasonally for Dallas McCrea Farms, Fort Fairfield and generously volunteered her time at the former Fort Fairfield Community General Hospital.

In addition to her parents, Sylvia was predeceased by her husband John on June 5, 2008; one son, Roger Pelkey; two daughters, Gloria Bossie and Joyce Linhares; seven brothers, Albert, Paul Emile, Richard, Donald, Arman, Vincent, and Reno Gorneault; five sisters, Rose Ann Bower, Bertha Duprey, Arlene Beland, Viola Gorneault, and Emelia Thornton.

She is survived by two sons, John Pelkey Jr. and his companion Storm Goodwin of Limestone, Philip Pelkey of Presque Isle; three daughters, Christine Trahan of Caribou, Janet Sullivan and Lynn Parkhurst, both of Fort Fairfield; two brothers, Reginald Gorneault of Bristol, CT, Lionel Gorneault and his wife Carol of Bristol, CT and West Palm Beach, FL; three sisters, Edwina Roderick of Lewiston, Yvette Pickard and her companion Bob of Poland, Loretta Stec of Saugus, MA; nineteen grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Friday, May 19, 2023 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will take place at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Fort Fairfield, immediately following the Mass. Interment will take place at the Northern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mrs. Pelkey to the St. Denis Catholic Church Memorial Fund, P.O.
