Fort Fairfield & Presque Isle – Joyce O. Johnston, 92, wife of the late Earle W. Johnston, passed away Saturday evening, March 25, 2023 at her Presque Isle home, following a brief illness. She was born December 20, 1930 in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Loomis R.F. and Gertrude (McKenney) Osborne.

She was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1948, attended Westbrook Junior College and Bryant & Stratton Business College, Boston. Joyce was married to Earle W. Johnston on June 10, 1952, was employed at H.O. Perry Insurance Company, Fort Fairfield, Sears and Roebuck Company, Fort Fairfield, and worked at the Fort Fairfield Town Office for seventeen years serving as treasurer and tax collector. She was a member of the Fort Fairfield Alumni Association and the Fort Fairfield Library Board.

In addition to her parents, Joyce was predeceased by her husband Earle on May 30, 2022; one son-in-law, Gregory Smith; one brother, Fredrick W. Osborne; one sister, Catherine (Ashby) Eisensmith.

She is survived by one daughter, Stephanie A. “Taffy” Smith of St. Augustine, FL; two grandchildren, Zachary Smith and his wife Alisha of Presque Isle, Kylan Joyce Smith of Charlotte, NC; three great grandchildren, Lydia Smith, Camrynn Smith and Gregory Herschel “JR” Smith, all of Presque Isle; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Anne (Ashby) Theriault and her husband Rosaire Jr. of Fort Fairfield.

A private service to honor the lives of Joyce and Earle will be conducted at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield later in the spring. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mrs. Johnston to the Fort Fairfield Alumni Association, P.O. Box 201, Fort Fairfield, Maine 04742.
