Fort Fairfield - Betty Nightingale Philbrick, 96, wife of the late George M. Philbrick Sr., passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at her Fort Fairfield home, following a period of declining health. She was born June 1, 1926 in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Herbert L. and Myrtle (Lovely) Nightingale.

Betty was a graduate of Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1944, and also attended Westbrook Junior College. Betty enjoyed a long career with New England Telephone where she was recognized for her sales ability. She was a member of the Fort Fairfield United Parish Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, Lunar Chapter No 126, Presque Isle, the United Parish Twenty-Thirty Club, and the Fort Fairfield Philomethian Club. Betty was the winner of Presque Isle’s One Hundred Year “Name the Celebration Contest”, with her entry of the “Presque Isle Centurama”. Betty was an avid reader, averaging one hundred and twenty books a year. She also enjoyed computer solitaire and dining out at Boondock’s Grill where her meal was automatically waiting for her and the Aroostook Valley Country Club who’s cash register had a key with Betty’s name on it. She also enjoyed sending cards to family, friends and classmates on special occasions, just to stay in touch.

In addition to her parents, Betty was predeceased by her husband, George Sr. on June 16, 2004; three grandchildren, Autumn Philbrick, Thomas Philbrick and Phillip Rowell; one brother, Herbert I. Nightingale. She is survived by two sons, George M. Philbrick Jr. of Dover, NH, Frederick H. Philbrick of Easton; one daughter, Sharon Philbrick Nadeau of Fort Fairfield; six grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; thoughtful nieces and respectful nephews.

A graveside service will take place later in the spring at the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield, at a date and time to be announced by the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield.
