Fort Fairfield – Charles B. “Toon” Murphy, 93, husband of the late Lois (Waldren) Murphy, passed away Friday evening, August 5, 2022 at a Mars Hill nursing facility, following a period of declining health. He was born June 2, 1929 in Caribou, the son of Oscar “Bert” and Anna Marie (Chaput) Murphy.

He attended Fort Fairfield schools and served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany. He was married to Lois (Waldren) Smith on June 20, 1955 and enjoyed a long career as a John Deere mechanic with J. W. Barnes, Inc., Fort Fairfield, Lovely Equipment, Fort Fairfield, Roy C. Thompson Equipment, Presque Isle, F.B. Harmon, Presque Isle, and retired from Theriault Equipment, Presque Isle in 2000. Toon’s blood was John Deere Green, and he was widely known and respected by many farmers near and far, and was named John Deere’s best mechanic in the eastern United States. Toon was a founding member of the Fort Fairfield Snowmobile Club, where he served as president and assisted the club in numerous capacities, and was a life member of the Fort Fairfield VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187.

In addition to his parents, Toon was predeceased by his wife Lois on May 30, 2015; one daughter, Jennifer Murphy; one stepson, Charles J. “Pudgy” Smith; one brother, Donald Murphy; two sisters, Evelyn Murphy Fararri, and Marie Murphy Boulier.

He is survived by one son, Samuel “Sam” Murphy and his companion Cindy Owens of Fort Fairfield; two stepsons, George Smith Jr. and his wife Vicki of Westfield, Robert “Bob” Smith of Presque Isle; stepdaughter-in-law, Sonia (O’Neal) Smith of Fort Fairfield; two brothers-in-law, Philip “Bill” Boulier of Manorville, NY, Norman Fararri of Farmington; four grandchildren, Billy Clark of Stockholm, Robert “Bobby” Smith, Jeremiah Smith, both of Presque Isle, Nicole Picorri and her husband John of Ballston Lake, NY; seven great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Tuesday August 9, 2022 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Giberson-Drosey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield, where the funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m.. Interment will follow at the St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will take place following the interment at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Murphy to the Fort Fairfield Snowmobile Club, P.O. Box 233, Fort Fairfield, Maine 04742.
