Fort Fairfield – Elmer Kornchuk, 90, passed away after a short illness Saturday morning, October 17th, at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Caribou. He was born on December 21st, 1929 in Meriden, CT, the son of Paul Kornchuk and Lydia (Horvath) Kornchuk.

He married his wife Beverly E. Wignall in 1959; she pre-deceased him in 2014. His sister Olga passed away in 2016; his younger sister Martha lives in Hesperia, CA. He is survived by daughter, Kristin L. Kornchuk of Lake Mary, FL; son, Kurt C. Kornchuk and his wife Deborah of Wasilla, AK and their children Grant and Kate; son, Karl W. Kornchuk and his wife Sue of Caribou and their daughter Krista.

Elmer was a graduate of Chaffee High School near Fontana, CA. He enlisted in the US Coast Guard during the Korean War and served aboard the Coast Guard Cutters Winona and Wachusett. His post-military career involved surveying and engineering work for the State of California, and service as a Law Enforcement Officer with the Sacramento County, CA and Clallam County, WA Sherriff’s Departments. He retired in Fort Fairfield with his wife and enjoyed watching deer, growing flowers and vegetables, and spent hours as an amateur radio operator (Ham) as a member of the Aroostook Amateur Radio Association where he and his wife met their closest friends. He was a most loving husband and father, and now rests with his wife in the presence of the Lord.

A private family gathering is planned later next summer.
