Fort Fairfield – Omar J. Butler Jr., husband of the late Ina J. (LeClair) Butler, passed away surrounded by his family Sunday morning, March 13, 2022 at his Fort Fairfield home, following a period of declining health. He was born February 5, 1936 in Fort Fairfield, the son of Omar J. Sr. and Beulah (Hitchcock) Butler.

Omar attended Fort Fairfield schools and had been employed by Lane Construction as a paver operator for thirty years. He also seasonally assisted several area potato farmers over the years. He was a communicant of the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, Fort Fairfield and was the last surviving member of the eight-grade Basketball Team State Championship Winning Team, a fact that he was quite proud of. Omar was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing and camping at Birch Point, Eagle Lake. Omar was a true gentleman, never judgmental and was extremely dedicated to his family and his church. His sons are so grateful to have had him to lookup to as a father and role model. His family was the most important thing to him, and he truly enjoyed every minute spent with each and every family member.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his stepmother, Theresa (Smith) Butler; his wife, Ina Butler; two brothers, Leonard and Edward Brooker; one sister, Melvina Rochford; one granddaughter, Bobby Jo Peffers; one grandson, Ryan Butler.

He is survived by his companion of many years, Sandra Thornton of Fort Fairfield; four sons and daughters-in-law, Danny A. and Cathy Butler of Fort Fairfield, Michael J. and Kathy Butler of Kenduskeag, Mitchell J. and Sharon Butler of Fort Fairfield, David P. Butler and Cathy Clark of Cross Lake; seven grandchildren and spouses, Stephen and Michelle Butler of Bangor, Mike and Wendy Tarbox of Glenburn Center, Adam and Archana Butler of Fort Fairfield, Sabrina and Steve Hardwick of Lincoln, Melissa and Tyler Libby, Maranda and Adam Bubar, Garrett and Tammy Cyr, all of Fort Fairfield; twelve great grandchildren, Ashley, Ethan, Emily, Catherine, Sam, Avery, John, Gracie, Aiden, Bobby, Silas and Toni; and one great great grandson, Omar; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Thursday March 17, 2022 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, March 18, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main Street, Fort Fairfield with Fr. David Raymond, Celebrant. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will follow the Mass at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Fort Fairfield. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Omar to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church.
