Fort Fairfield – David R. O’Neal, 68, husband of Trudy A. (Chapman) O’Neal, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday morning, March 2, 2022 at his Fort Fairfield home. He was born September 16, 1953 in Fort Fairfield, the son of Hurlbert T. “Bud” and Helen V. (McGary) O’Neal.

He attended Fort Fairfield schools and was a graduate of the Presque Isle High School, Class of 1972, and also attended Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute, Presque Isle, in their plumbing and heating program. David was a veteran of the United States Navy having served on the Aircraft Carrier USS Hancock, homeport of Alameda, CA during the Vietnam War from 1972 to 1974. He was married to Trudy A. Chapman on October 7, 1977, was a member of the Fort Fairfield Lions Club and the Fort Fairfield Rifle and Pistol Club. After his military service, David had been employed by Arthur W. Chapman Plumbing and Heating, later A. W. Chapman & Sons, Fort Fairfield, for more than twenty years and he later owned and operated Dave’s Fiberglass Repair. He had worked for Dorsey Funeral Home, Fort Fairfield over many years and was currently employed with Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Fort Fairfield since 2007.

David enjoyed riding his Harley, tinkering with and on most anything, a “Jack of All Trades”, was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arthur W. and Marion L. Chapman; two brothers-in-law, Clifton S. “Butch” Brook, Charles J. “Pudgy” Smith; an especially close and dear uncle, Philip R. “Uncle Phil” Hathaway.

He is survived by his wife of nearly forty-five years, Trudy A. O’Neal of Fort Fairfield; two sisters, Sonia L. O’Neal Smith of Fort Fairfield, Pamela J. O’Neal of Bangor; three aunts, Nancy L. Hathaway of Houlton; Kathleen Carter of Brewer, and Shirley Flanagan of Hermon; two brothers-in-law, William D. Chapman and his wife Sandra, Dana W. Chapman; one sister-in-law, Rebecca M. Brook, all of Fort Fairfield; nephews and nieces, Jamison S. O’Neal, Tonnie Smyth and her husband Donnie, Vikki Donnelly, Debbie Peters and her husband JD, BJ Chapman and his fiancé Rose, Travis L. Brook and his wife Cristie, Jason R. Brook, Joel D. Brahim and his wife Angela, several great nieces, nephews and many cousins, including special cousins, Michelle Hathaway, Denise O’Neal, Justin Stewart and Marcy Hernandez. David had many friends including special friends, Peter and Lisa Dubay, Chase and Tucker Dubay, who are truly held in our hearts as family; through all the years they are always there for us, lifelong friend, Peter Bennett and his wife Donna. Last but certainly not least close friends and also considered as family, Stephen P. Dorsey, Aaron and Stacy Giberson and their children, Sophie and Liam “The Kids” who David loved very dearly, and his most resent “Light of His Life” Molly.

Friends may call Monday, March 7, 2022 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, March 8, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at the Celebration Center, 170 Houlton Road, Fort Fairfield with Rev. Mark Babin officiating. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held after the service at the Fort Fairfield Lions Club, 204 Forest Avenue, Fort Fairfield. Interment with military honors will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield, later in the spring.
