Limestone – Gretchen L. Griffeth, 98, wife of the late Donald B. Griffeth, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, December 14, 2021 at a Caribou nursing facility. She was born December 1, 1923 in Limestone, the daughter of Andrew T. and Evelyn (Toner) Adams.

Gretchen attended Limestone schools and was an active lifelong member of the Limestone United Methodist Church and a member of the Limestone United Methodist Women. Gretchen was a dedicated and hardworking farm wife and homemaker, cooking, and caring not only for her large family, but for extended family and seasonal farm workers helping with the annual potato harvest. Donald and Gretchen’s hard work, generosity and civic responsibilities carried on throughout their lives in various capacities, including with “Meals on Wheels” for seventeen years, and Gretchen’s wonderful cooking was appreciated at many church functions and bereavement luncheons over the years. Gretchen loved traveling with her husband and friends, and was especially fond of outings to the Long Lake Sporting Club and camping trips to Lake Edward, New Brunswick. Gretchen was chosen in 2000 for her unselfish devotion to be Miss November 2001 in the Aroostook County Women of the Month Calendar, and recipient of the Boston Globe Cane in 2019. Gretchen was featured in the Aroostook Republican “County Faces” in 2013, she held several offices at the Limestone United Methodist Church including president of the Dorcas Society of Women, chairman of the annual Chicken Pie Dinner, and the Worship and Bereavement Committees, and also delivered floral pieces for her daughter-in-law, Jane Griffeth.

In addition to her parents, Gretchen was predeceased by her husband Donald on June 20, 2004; one son-in-law, Tyler Perry; five brothers, Gerald, Phillip, Graydon, Carroll and John Adams; one sister, Eleanor McGovern; one brother-in-law, Sheldon Moir; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Adams, Virginia Adams.

She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Galen and Margaret Griffeth of Caribou, David and Roxanne Griffeth of Greeley, CO, Fred and Jane Griffeth of Limestone, Gary Griffeth of Topsham; four daughters and sons-in-law, Carlie and Thomas Marquis of Limestone, Tanya and John Dowiat of Carpentersville, IL, Judy and Dave Herrmann of Perry, OH, Patty Perry of Houlton; one sister, Lucille Moir of Seymour, CT; one sister-in-law, Rachel Cyr Adams of Limestone; twenty grandchildren; forty-one great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate Gretchen’s life will be conducted at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield in the summer of 2022 at a date and time to be announced. Interment will follow the service at the Northern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Caribou.
