Obituary for Vera Evelyn Johnston (Goodwin)

FORT FAIRFIELD

Fort Fairfield - Vera Evelyn Johnston, aged 100, passed away on January 8, 2020. She was born on February 18, 1919 in Presque Isle, the oldest of 8 children of Alfred and Sarah (Kerrigan) Goodwin.

Vera graduated from Fort Fairfield High School in 1937 and Madigan Memorial School of Nursing in Houlton in 1941. She married Loomis Gulliver Johnston of Fort Fairfield in 1942. She was employed as an RN at Fort Fairfield Community Hospital and A.R. Gould Memorial Hospital in Presque Isle.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Ralph, Bill, Harold, Marilyn, Gladys, Sarah (Sally) and Mabel. Her husband Loomis died in 1989, younger son Keith in 1996 and older son Wayne in 2016.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law Penny (Devine) Johnston of Fort Fairfield and three grandchildren: Christopher Johnston and wife Kelley of Presque Isle, Richard Johnston and wife Kerry of York and Angela Thibeau and husband Marc of Rye, NH. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Colton Johnston of Presque Isle, Riley and Kelsey Johnston of York, and Heather Thibeau of Rye, NH as well as several nieces and nephews. She will be fondly remembered by a special niece Elaine Tedeschi of Lebanon, NH and former daughter-in-law Jean Shaw of Caribou.

To honor and respect Vera the request is made that donations be given to the activities fund at Northern Light Continuing Care, PO Box 410, Mars Hill, ME 04758, where she was a resident. Also to commemorate her love of cats - to the Central Aroostook Humane Society at 26 Cross Street in Presque Isle, ME 04769. And because Vera suffered from macular degeneration, the Fort Fairfield Public Library has a Large Print Book Fund set up in her name, c/o Fort Fairfield Public Library, 339 Main Street, Fort Fairfield, Maine 04742.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. Online condolences may be expressed at www.gibersondorseyfuneralhome.com .
