Fort Fairfield – Signa Anna (DeWitt) Doughty, age 84, wife of the late Gary W. Doughty, went peacefully to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday evening, December 8th, 2019, following a brief illness. Beloved daughter and 1st child of Ida (Jenkins) and Clarence “Ted” DeWitt, she was born on November 11th, 1935 in Fort Fairfield.

She attended Fort Fairfield schools and in the 1950’s met and married the love of her life, Gary Doughty on November 25, 1953. Signa was employed with the F. W. Woolworth and Farringtons Department Stores, in Fort Fairfield. She and her husband Gary co-owned and operated Achorn’s Shoe Store, Fort Fairfield from 1986 to 1989.

Our amazing Mom loved spending time with her family and friends, and made the most awesome pies (especially pumpkin)! She was a dear friend as well as a loving mom to us, always taking care of us no matter how old we were. She was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing games, board games, and Words With Friends. Mom had a good sense of humor, and possessed a great passion for taking pictures and researching family tree information. She enjoyed old movies and music, her favorite artists being Elvis and Johnny Cash. She will be missed tremendously by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, Signa was predeceased by her beloved husband of nearly 58 years Gary on May 30, 2011; four brothers, Wayne DeWitt (2012), Gary DeWitt (1991), Dale DeWitt (2016), Vernon DeWitt (2018); two sisters, Sharon Morrow (1997), Joyce Stanfield (2009); one sister-in-law, Mary DeWitt (2014); her granddaughter, Michele Breault (2015); and great grandson, Nicholas Barlow (1997). She is survived by her seven children, three sons, Michael (Donna) Doughty of Winslow, Alan (Sharon) Doughty of Bedford, New Hampshire, Matthew Doughty (companion, Danielle) of Caribou; four daughters, Robin (David) Dix of Fort Fairfield and Londonderry, NH, Karyn Pinette of Fort Fairfield, Carla (Stephen) St. Germain of Woburn, MA, Christina Doughty of Fort Fairfield; daughter-in-law, Roberta Doughty of Portage; 14 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; sister, Doreen (Gerald) Cyr of Presque Isle; sisters-in-laws, Helen Dewitt of Arizona, Lorraine DeWitt of Presque Isle, Bonnie Gilman of Arizona, Virginia Cote, Joanne Wilcox, Edie (Butch) Doughty, Janet Owens, all of Fort Fairfield; numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends, both near and far.

Friends may call Sunday, December 15, 2019 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield where funeral service will be conducted 1:00 p.m. with Marty Thompson officiating. Spring interment will take place at the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield, following the funeral service. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mrs. Doughty to the Jimmy Fund, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 8492168, Boston, MA 02284-9168. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
