Caribou – Rita M. Murphy, 91, wife of the late Clifford G. Murphy, passed away Friday morning, June 7, 2019 at a Caribou healthcare facility, following a brief illness. She was born July 31, 1927 in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Dennis Xavier and Sophie (Soucy) Martin.

She attended Fort Fairfield schools and was married to Clifford G. Murphy on November 4, 1950. Rita had been employed at Miller’s Department Store, Caribou and later worked for Birdseye Foods, Caribou, however her greatest achievement was being a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Rita’s family goes far beyond those mentioned. Mom, Gram, Grammy, Nana, Great Nana, are names she held with pride, and easily earned with her love. Family, faith, love and her unique wisdom are the powers she instilled in all blessed to call her by these names. The pride she held for her Family, shines through to all who listened. Mom’s unending love for Dad, her devotion to Family, her limitless Faith, her strength, and her intense ability to love, are lessons to us all.

In addition to her parents, Rita was predeceased by her husband Clifford G. Murphy; six sisters, Rose Reid, Jeannette Robbins, Anita Yorski, Lorette Martin, Gladys Kowalczyk, Lorraine Martin; six brothers, Guy, Addis, Edrich, Pearly, Roland and Percy Martin. She is survived by three sons and daughter-in-laws, Larry and Irene Murphy, John and Terry Murphy, all of Fort Kent, Brian Murphy of Caribou; two daughters, Deborah Best and Lynn Murphy, both of New Sweden, and Lynn’s partner, Steve Kovak; two sisters, Germaine Allard and Lillian St. Pierre both of Bath, NY; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Frederick and Louise Martin, Richard and Gail Martin, all of Bath, NY; five grandchildren and spouses, Christopher and Heather Best of Massachusetts, Kasie and Will Leary of Massachusetts, Kimberly and Jose Munoz of Arizona, Erica Bennett and wife Trish Gagnon, and Ben Murphy and Michelle Gregoire, all of Maine; great grandchildren, Nathan Best, Tyler Best, Parker Best, Rowan Murphy Best, Sean and Hannah Munoz, Cole and Collin Bennett, Devin Gagnon, Elsie, Andrew, Caleb and Isaac Murphy; numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Thursday June 13, 2019 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday June 13, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. Interment will follow the Mass at the Northern Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 37 Lombard Road, Caribou. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mrs. Murphy to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 678572, Dallas, TX 75267-8572.
