Mars Hill – Clara T. Hussey, 99, wife of the late Stetson H. “Ted” Hussey Jr., passed away Friday morning, February 16, 2018 at her Mars Hill residence, following a brief illness. She was born June 21, 1918 in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Hiram E. Sr. and Kate (Everett) Towle.

She graduated from Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1936 and graduated from Aurora University, Aurora, Illinois, in 1942. She spent time working in Oakland, CA and Boston, MA, prior to her 56 year marriage to Stetson H. Hussey, Jr. on September 17, 1948. Clara was a member of the Mars Hill United Methodist Church, the Mars Hill Country Club and a long time member of the Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield where she was past president of the Canadian Ladies Golf Association. Through the years, she had been active in various clubs, community projects and church work. She sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school, taught Migratory students in Bridgewater and did substitute teaching in Mars Hill and Bridgewater. In earlier years, she conducted Saturday morning down hill ski classes for children at Mars Hill Big Rock. She enjoyed teaching, also golf, fishing, partridge hunting, camping, music, cooking, knitting, quilting, reading and decorating milk cans. Clara also enjoyed making molasses and chocolate chip cookies, apple pies, Dagwood blondies, chocolates with nuts, bran cereal with bananas, making pickles and coffee sessions at Al’s with the Golden Girls.

In addition to her parents, Clara was predeceased by her husband Stetson on March 31, 2005; six brothers, Everett, Arthur, Donald, John Hiram Jr. and Charles Towle; four sisters, Helen Bubar, Ruth Smith, Mary Kimball and Kathryn Kinney. She is survived by one son, Bruce L. Hussey of Mars Hill; numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind a special friend, Glenda Bell; and caregivers, Lynn and Brittany of hospice care.

Friends may call Wednesday February 21, 2018 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. at the Mars Hill United Methodist Church, 20 Main Street, Mars Hill, where funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Susan Brown officiating. Interment will be in Kings Grove Cemetery in Mars Hill, later in the spring. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Clara to the Aroostook Health Center, P.O. Box 410, Mars Hill, Maine 04758 or the Aroostook House of Comfort, P.O. Box 867, Presque Isle, Maine 04769. Envelopes will be available at the church.
