Caribou & Limestone – Paul Duncan Haines, 83, husband of the late Barbara (Bisbee) Haines, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, Friday evening November 17, 2017 at a Bangor healthcare facility, following a brief illness. He was born August 28, 1934 in Fort Fairfield, the son Theodore and Opha (Duncan) Haines.

Paul was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School and a graduate of the University of Maine at Orono where he received a bachelor’s degree in Agronomy. While attending UMO, Paul excelled at basketball and remained involved in U-Maine sports throughout his life. He served his country with the United States Army from November 15, 1955 to October 31, 1961. Paul owned and operated Haines Insurance and Real Estate in Limestone for many years and had been actively involved in local civic affairs, organizations and groups.

In addition to his parents, Paul was predeceased by his wife Barbara on July 30, 2002; one sister, Katherine “Kay” McKenney. He is survived by two daughters, Deborah Whelden of Veazie, Karen Donovan and her husband Peter of Scarborough; four grandchildren, Howie Whelden Jr. and his wife Kelsi of Old Town, Erin Lauze and her husband Kevin of Norwood, MA, Griffin Donovan and Megan Donovan, both of Scarborough; one great granddaughter, Lucy Whelden of Old Town; several nieces and nephews.

Paul’s family wishes to extend their sincere and heartfelt gratitude to the Eastern Maine Medical Center, most especially to the Palliative Care Staff and nurses at Six East for the wonderful care and compassionate care given to Paul and his family during his illness.

In keeping with Paul’s wishes, a private graveside service will be conducted in the spring of 2018 at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Haines to the Jefferson Cary Foundation, P.O. Box 89, Caribou, Maine 04736.
