Fort Fairfield - Donald A. Pelkey, 67, husband of Christine (Michaud) Pelkey, passed away Tuesday evening, October 31, 2017 at a Caribou healthcare facility, following an extended illness. He was born November 5, 1949 in Fort Fairfield, the son of Arthur J. "Archie" and Beatrice Agnes (Blanchard) Pelkey.

Donald attended Fort Fairfield schools and proudly served his country with the United States Army from November 6, 1967 to January 26, 1970, completing three tours of duty in Vietnam. Following his discharge from the Army, Mr. Pelkey worked as a carpenter for many years, and was married to Christine Michaud on May 7, 2005. Donald was a member of the American Legion Walter Lovely Post No. 176, where he was currently serving as commander, was past commander of the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, and was a member of D.A.V. Smart-Ricker Chapter 10. Donald will be remembered as a hardworking, generous man who lived to help his fellow veterans. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and being a wonderful "Pappy" to his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Donald was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Lou Pelkey and Gladys Mae Land; one grandson, Joshua Cunrod. He is survived by his wife Christine of Fort Fairfield; two stepdaughters, Jessica Cunrod and her husband Robbie of Stockholm, Stephanie McIntosh and her fiancé Ryan Michaud of Caribou; one brother, Graydon Pelkey of Arizona; seven sisters and their spouses, Darlene and Arthur Philips of Kincardine, New Brunswick, Diane and Fred Butler, Maxine Johnston, Virginia and Philip McMann, all of Fort Fairfield, Stella Pelkey of Virginia, Carolyn and Jim Lilly of New Hampshire, Joanne McMann and her companion Murray Prest of Fort Fairfield; three grandchildren, Sadie Gendreau of Caribou, Emily Cunrod of Stockholm, Sophie Michaud of Caribou; numerous nieces and nephews. 

A graveside service with military honors will be conducted Monday November 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Northern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 37 Lombard Road, Caribou with the Rev. Mark Babin officiating. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will follow at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Pelkey to the Maine Veterans Home, 163 Van Buren Road, Caribou, Maine 04736.
