LIMESTONE & COLLINS, GA

Limestone & Collins, GA – Shirley (Corbin) Smith, 98, wife of the late James R. Smith, passed away Wednesday morning, October 11, 2017 at a Caribou nursing facility, following a brief illness. She was born July 20, 1919 in Emanuel City, GA, the daughter of George C. and Laura B. (Jones) Corbin.

She attended Oak Park, GA schools and the Georgia Normal School where she received her certificate as a schoolteacher, and worked as such in her younger years. Shirley also served as a Sunday school teacher for many years and was a dedicated member of the several churches she attended over the years, and a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church. As a military wife, she and her husband traveled extensively to several places, including Germany. She was married to James R. Smith on September 9, 1944.

The family of Mrs. Smith would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of the Caribou Nursing Home for wonderful care provided Shirley during her stay.

In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was predeceased by two brothers, Merrill and Randall Corbin. She is survived by one son, James C. Smith of Collins, GA; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Greg Ward of Limestone; one sister, Doris Chafin of Jonesboro, GA; sister-in-law, Barbara Corbin of Columbia, SC; four grandchildren, John Ward and his wife Frances of Eva Beach, HI, Beau Smith and his companion Emily Brown of Collins, GA, Chrystal Ward of Pittsburgh, PA, Nikki Oglesby and her husband Michael of Swainsboro, GA; four great grandchildren, Taylor Smith, Clay Mobley, Raelyn Oglesby, Hunter Oglesby; special friends, Vicky and Sammy Woodard, Angie Cisneros; seven nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted at the Pine Grove Baptist Church, Collins, GA at a later date. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mrs. Smith to the Pine Grove Baptist Church, 3317 Pine Grove Church Road, Collins, Georgia 30421. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield.
