Fort Fairfield – Janet H. Cooperstein, 96, wife of the late William I. Cooperstein, passed away Sunday morning, December 25, 2016 at a Mars Hill nursing facility, following a brief illness. She was born September 5, 1920 in Stamford, CT, the daughter of Abram B. and Rae (Siegel) Cohen.

She had lived in Fort Fairfield since the age of three months and graduated from the Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1938. Janet attended Westbrook Junior College and Civilian Pilot Training Ground School in Caribou and Airways Inc. in Brunswick. Her first solo flight took place on her mother’s birthday November 29, 1941 from Brunswick Airport. She was in hopes of obtaining her pilots license and instructors license, but unfortunately, Pearl Harbor was attacked nine days later and in February of 1942 the airport became closed to civilians. Janet worked for Pam America Airlines in New York for a brief period of time and was married to William I. Cooperstein on May 10, 1948. She later became employed in the office at A. B. Cohen Potato Brokerage Company in Fort Fairfield for several years and also worked as a News Stringer for the Portland Press Herald and Sunday Telegram, the Associated Press, WAGM News and the Aroostook Republican. She was also a past member of the Maine Poets Society.

In addition to her parents and husband, Janet was predeceased by one infant daughter, Sarah Cooperstein; one sister, Ruth Milgram; one brother, Leonard Cohen. She is survived by one son, Lawrence A. Cooperstein of Fort Fairfield; one daughter, Heidi E. Cooperstein of West Glover, VT; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted later in the spring at the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mrs. Cooperstein to the Fort Fairfield Public Library, 339 Main Street, Fort Fairfield, Maine 04742.
