Obituary for Bernard R. "Ben" Cyr

Bernard R. "Ben" Cyr
BERNARD R. “BEN” CYR
BANGOR & WINTERVILLE

Bangor & Winterville – Bernard R. “Ben” Cyr, 66, passed away peacefully at his home, staring out at St. Froid Lake with his wife Donna by his side on Thursday morning, October 13, 2016. He was born August 18, 1950 in Eagle Lake, the son of Maurice and Muriel “Sis” (Mertes) Cyr.

Ben was a graduate of the Fort Kent High School where he excelled in baseball and basketball. Before graduating from the University of Maine at Fort Kent, he slept under the stars as he hitchhiked his way through Scotland and Ireland and travel to many other places before returning to Maine. Following his college graduation, Ben taught Forestry in Ashland but spent the better part of his life in Bangor where he worked for the Air National Guard as a building maintenance supervisor for over twenty-six years, retiring in 2016. Among Ben’s many passions his favorite was exploring the woods. He always spent time every summer with his brother and best friend “Babe”, searching for undiscovered fishing holes. There wasn’t a dirt road or mud hole between The Allagash and Bangor that he didn’t know. He was never happier than when he and Donna laughed and set off on one of their “Excellent Adventures”. Ben was always the first to help but never asked for anything in return, even when he was in need. He was a gentle soul with a patient heart and his sense of humor was infectious.

He was predeceased by his father, Dr. Maurice Cyr, DDS; and his son, Alec Cyr; one niece, Cheryl Marquis Esty. He is survived by his wife Donna Sandstrom Cyr of Winterville; one daughter, Charlotte Cyr of Kennebunk; his mother Muriel “Sis” Cyr of Caribou; one brother, Maurice “Babe” Cyr II and his wife Vicki of San Jose, CA; one sister, Kathy Marquis of Gorham; one grandson Chase Cyr of Scituate, MA; several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday October 22, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Louis Catholic Church, 26 East Main Street, Fort Kent with Fr. James Nadeau celebrant. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held after the Mass at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Council Number 1934, 372 Frenchville Road, Fort Kent. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in Ben’s memory to the Fort Kent Ladies of St. Anne, 26 East Main Street, Fort Kent, Maine 04743.
