Fort Fairfield – Richard E. Poirier Jr., 75, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday morning, April 27, 2016 with his wife Theresea of fifty-two years by his side. He was born December 23, 1940 in Clinton, MA, the son of Richard E. Sr. and Helen (Holland) Poirier.

He served with the United States Navy from 1958 to 1964 as a cook aboard the USS Van Voorhis. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he married the love of his life Theresea Rogerson on October 10, 1964. Together they started their family in Massachusetts and later moved to Fort Fairfield to raise their children. Richard was self-employed as a truck driver until his retirement. He loved gardening, playing with his tractor, cooking and arguing politics.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Poirier was predeceased by one brother Russell Poirier. He is survived by his wife Theresea of Fort Fairfield; two sons, Thomas Poirier and his wife Dora of North Providence, RI, John Poirier of Augusta; three daughters, Deborah Haggerty and her husband Scott of Presque Isle, Theresea “Midge” Poirier of Augusta, Martha Poirier and her wife Tammy of Presque Isle; two brothers, Michael Poirier of California, Paul Poirier of Massachusetts; two sisters, Ann Watts and her husband Bud, Ruth Long, all of Kentucky; nine grandchildren; one great granddaughter; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends including Doug and Hattie Clifford of Fort Fairfield. At Richard’s request, there will be no calling hours.

A committal service with military honors will be conducted Tuesday May 3, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Northern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 37 Lombard Road, Caribou. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Poirier to the Maine Veterans Home Memorial Fund, 163 Van Buren Road, Caribou, Maine 04736.
