Obituary for Donald F. Gallagher

FORT FAIRFIELD & PRESQUE ISLE
Fort Fairfield & Presque Isle – Donald F. Gallagher, 89, passed away Friday morning, August 21, 2015 after a long period of declining health. Don was born February 3, 1926, the son of John Guy and Mary (Campbell) Gallagher, in Newburg, New Brunswick, Canada, and immigrated to Presque Isle with his family at the age of three.

Don was a graduate of the Presque Isle High School Class of 1943. He enlisted in the United States Navy in WWII, serving as a gunner in the North Atlantic convoys. He returned from the Navy to grow potatoes on the family farm until his retirement in 1990. He was a lifelong communicant of the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, Fort Fairfield. Don was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council Number 1753, Fort Fairfield, and served on the board of directors for Maine Potato Growers, Farm Credit and the Young Farmers. Don was a friend to many and will be remembered for his sense of humor and quick wit. He loved music and sang with the Gallagher Brothers throughout the area for many years. Also, in his retirement he was instrumental in supporting and donating land to the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle, some of those trails pass through what was his beautiful property.

Don was predeceased by his parents; and his brothers, Lloyd, John, J. Patrick and Ralph. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lillace M. (Lovely) Gallagher of Presque Isle; five children, Ellen Bricco and her husband Darrell of Green Bay, WI, Carl Gallagher and his wife Janis of Caribou, Diane Gallagher of Ellsworth, Virginia Thompson and her husband David of Waldo, Marcia Gallagher of Hallowell; two brothers, Gerald Gallagher and his wife Priscilla, Guy Gallagher, all of Presque Isle; two sisters, Theresa Mahoney of Carlow, New Brunswick, and Mary Schneider of Fort Fairfield; seven grandchildren, Alex Bricco, Erin Gallagher, John and Sam Keefe, Barb Thompson, Dan Thompson, and Jared Berube; several nieces and nephews. The Gallagher family would like to thank the Presque Isle Nursing Home doctors and staff for the excellent care provided for Don during his stay there.

Friends may call Tuesday August 25, 2015 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main Street, Fort Fairfield with Fr. Jean-Paul Labrie celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Presque Isle. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held after the interment service at the Fort Fairfield Knights of Columbus Hall Council Number 1753, 260 Main Street. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Gallagher to the Alzheimer’s Association Maine Chapter, 383 US Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, Maine 04074.
