Obituary for Audrey Elizabeth Johnston (Libby)

AUDREY ELIZABETH (LIBBY) JOHNSTON
TOCCOA, GA & FORT FAIRFIELD

Audrey Elizabeth (Libby) Johnston went to her Heavenly Home from Heritage Healthcare of Toccoa, Georgia, on July 22, 2014. Audrey was born July 27, 1921, in Fort Fairfield, Maine, the daughter of Melvin S. and Etta (Trafford) Libby. On September 19, 1942, Audrey married George W. Johnston and they shared 51 years together until his death in 1993. Most of their married life was spent on the family farm on the Dorsey Road in Fort Fairfield. They moved to Gwinnett Christian Terrace apartments in Lilburn, GA, in 1990.

In addition to her husband, Audrey was predeceased by her parents, her grandparents William and Ella Trafford, for whom she cared until their deaths, and her brothers Kenneth E. Libby and his wife Virginia (Palmer) Libby, and William R. Libby. She is survived by her children Rev. David (Beryl) Johnston of Athens, GA, Franklin Johnston of Toccoa, GA, Sharon (John) McNair of Toccoa, GA, and Alan (Diana) Johnston of Martin, GA; Grandchildren Martha (David) Burriss and daughters Ashley, Emily, and Audrey of Anderson, SC; Melissa (Scott) Taylor and sons Dillon and Ty of Hilton, South Africa, Dorothy (Harold) Dale and children Alexander, Emma Reece, and Katherine, and Michael Johnston all of Athens, GA. She is also survived by one sister-in-law Elizabeth (William) Libby of Fort Worth, TX, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Audrey was a long-time member and held many offices in the Fort Fairfield Grange and was an active member of the Bethel Baptist Church, especially participating in the ladies missionary society. After moving to GA, she became an active member of Lilburn Oaks Baptist Church in Lilburn and worshiped there until her death. Before her marriage she worked several years as bookkeeper at Watson's Hardware Store and after retirement from the farm, she was a clerk at Acorn's Shoe Store, both on Main Street in Fort Fairfield. She enjoyed participating in the many activities and trips planned regularly by the social directors of the Gwinnett Christian Terrace for many years there.

The family will be gathering for a memorial celebration at the home of Sharon McNair on Sunday, July 27, which would have been Audrey's 93rd birthday. Interment will be held on Friday September 26, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Fort Fairfield with Audrey's son Rev. David Johnston officiating. Arrangements will be through Giberson Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. Memorial gifts in her name may be contributed to Gwinnett Christian Terrace, 414 Berkmar Way, Lilburn, GA 30047.
